A most peculiar earring from the Dayak people of Kalimantan (Borneo). It is carved from hornbill beak: worn by men, greatly enhances their prowess in hunting and head-taking. Also seen in "Power and Gold"p.324.

Here is a traditional jewel from Turkmenistan: a pendent apt to contain verses from the Koran.It has three bright carnelian stones set in the upper part, while the bottom is a cylinder that can be opened.This ancient jewel is in solid silver and is decorated with gilded zones.It is called "tumar" and is much longed for by afgan women: they believe it to be a protection against bad luck.
